The Morning of Banaras
It begins neighborhood by neighborhood,
Each at its own hour, in its own unique way,
From the sacred hours before dawn until nine,
As the sun shifts from a fiery red to a bright yellow.
From Adikeshwar to Shooltankeshwar,
From Kaithi to Kandwa,
Every neighborhood and every village
Has its very own definition,
Its own tradition and practice of Subah-e-Banaras.
In fact, this practice is deeply personal—
Guided solely by the mood and whim
Of each individual Banarasi.
Radheshyam Chacha, alongside Chachi,
Baths at Dashashwamedh Ghat, offering prayers to the rising sun,
While his son, Maheep, heads out
At four-thirty in the morning straight to the gym.
The daughter, Bhavna, joins
The Subah-e-Banaras yoga sessions at Assi Ghat
Alongside her dearest friend, Nisha—
Who comes just to listen,
Fulfilling her love for music before her upcoming wedding
As an eager listener to the cultural programs playing on Assi’s morning stage.
Dilipva from Chetganj fires up his clay stove
As early as four o'clock, waiting for the daily newspaper,
Because by four-thirty, his regular customers start pouring in—
Who, while sipping tea, serve as the ultimate news anchors
For the entire neighborhood and all of Banaras.
At the Maidagin intersection,
Piping-hot kachoris begin to surface,
And Bhaggu, the sweet-maker, is busy frying jalebis,
Shouting orders left and right to his helpers, Munnava and Pappu.
At the Kacheri Golghar, a frantic chaos unfolds
Among the newspaper hawkers sorting through their daily bundles.
Mithilesh Maharaj, freshly bathed and sharply dressed,
Is fully absorbed in adorning and decorating the idol of Hanumanji,
For a sea of regular devotees begins to gather from the first light of dawn.
Rabban Miyan often finds two completely different slippers on his feet,
In his frantic rush to reach the mosque for the Fajr prayers—
For the moment he hears the Azaan, he scrambles to get ready,
Terrified of missing even a single unit of his prayer.
Bhonu Sardar begins showering curses
Upon his growing son, Suresh,
Who, instead of feeding and watering the cows and buffaloes,
Lies hidden under his bedsheet, completely glued to his mobile screen.
Bhojubeer and Sundarpur begin to buzz with life
With people buying fresh produce from the morning vegetable markets after their early walks.
From the milk market at Pandeypur intersection
To the labor market at Ardali Bazar,
Every single neighborhood wakes up to its own distinct morning
In our beloved Banaras—
A morning quite apart from that grand spectacle
That unfolds gracefully along the steps of the Ganga,
Stretching all the way from Assi to Rajghat.
